ATHENS, Ohio – Despite an impressive performance by
Brianna Pratt in the circle, the Miami University softball team split a double-header on Friday afternoon with the Ohio Bobcats. Miami dropped a 4-2 decision in game one and the RedHawks battled back in the second game to win 7-6. The split puts Ohio at 10-3 overall and 1-1 in Mid-American Conference competition. Miami goes to 13-8 on the season and 1-1 in the MAC.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
- In the top of the first Allie Cummins got it started for the RedHawks, hitting a home run to grab a 1-0 lead.
- Riley Coyne then doubled the lead 2-0 after hitting an RBI double that scored Shelby Kunkel.
- The Bobcats tied it up in the bottom of the first on an RBI that scored two runners. They then took the lead 4-2 on another RBI single that scored another pair.
- Through the remainder of the game there were no runs scored, giving Ohio the 4-2 win.
NOTES:
- Pratt allowed only seven hits and had nine strikeouts.
- Coyne and Holly Blaska hit doubles.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
- In the top of the second inning Holly Blaska hit a home run to grab the 1-0 lead for the RedHawks.
- Jenna Golembiewski then hit a back-to-back home run to double the lead 2-0.
- In the bottom of the second the Bobcats cut the deficit to 2-1 on a fielder's choice.
- In the top of the third Coyne extended the RedHawks' lead to 4-1 on a two-run home run that also scored Kunkel.
- The Bobcats put another run on the board on an RBI single in the bottom of the third to make the score 4-2.
- In that same inning the Bobcats took the lead 5-2 on a three-run home run.
- The RedHawks took the lead back 6-5 in the top of the fourth when Cummins hit her second home run of the day to score herself and Karli Spaid.
- The Bobcats tied it up again in the bottom of the fourth on a solo homerun, making the score 6-6.
- In the top of the seventh Coyne hit her second home run of the game to put the RedHawks back on top, 7-6, which was the winning score.
NOTES:
- Cummins, Coyne, Blaska, and Golembiewski recorded an RBI.
- Laurelai DePew allowed only three hits and had two strikeouts in her 2.0 innings
- Pratt had six strikeouts and only seven hits in her 5.0 innings. She also recorded her 500th career strikeout.
