RedHawks Split Doubleheader Against Western Kentucky

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Miami split a pair with Western Kentucky on Saturday afternoon. The RedHawks were out-hit and fell in the first game of their doubleheader against the Hilltoppers, 15-7. Their bats came back to life in the second game, defeating the Hilltoppers 8-5. The split brings Western Kentucky to 15-7 on the season and the RedHawks to 11-7.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
  • In the bottom of the first the Hilltoppers got the scoring started on an RBI single, making the score 1-0.
  • The RedHawks tied it up, 1-1, in the top of the second on a home run by Riley Coyne.
  • In the top of the third the RedHawks doubled their lead, 2-1, when Coyne hit a single RBI to score Maddi Banks.
  • The Hilltoppers took back the lead in the bottom of the third when three scored on a home run, turning the score to 4-2.
  • On another three-run home run Western Kentucky increased their lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the fourth.
  • In the top of the fifth the RedHawks tied it up again 7-7 with an RBI single from Coyne, an RBI triple from Jenna Golembiewski, and an RBI single from Karli Spaid. These RBI scored Holly Blaska, Coyne, Maddi Banks, Logan Mueller, and Golembiewski.
  • Western Kentucky took the lead back again in the bottom of the fifth on a home run, gaining a 10-7 lead.
  • In the bottom of the sixth the Hilltoppers added another few runs to their lead on walks, making it 14-7.
  • On an RBI single they increased their lead to 15-7 and ended the game.
 
NOTES:
  • Coyne went 3-for-3 at the plate.
  • Spaid, Coyne, and Golembiewski secured RBI and each had extra-base hits.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
  • Miami struck first in the top of the first inning on an RBI triple by Shelby Kunkel that scored Spaid, giving the RedHawks the early 1-0 lead.
  • The RedHawks doubled their lead 2-0 in the top of the second when Golembiewski scored on a double by Adriana Barlow.
  • In the bottom of the third Coyne extended the lead again with a homerun. Along with herself, Kunkel and Allie Cummins also crossed the plate to make the score 5-0.
  • In the top of the fifth Blaska tripled to score Kunkel. Golembiewski then homered, herself and Blaska scored, increasing the deficit to 8-0.
  • In the bottom of the fifth the Hilltoppers put a couple of runs up on a home run to cut the lead to 8-2.
  • The Hilltoppers cut the deficit even further in the bottom of the sixth inning on a three-run homer to put the score at 8-5.
 
NOTES:
  • Kunkel, Blaska, and Barlow each went 2-for-3 at the plate.
  • Golembiewski and Coyne each had a homer.
  • Kunkel and Blaska each had a triple.

UP NEXT: The RedHawks will face Western Kentucky University on Sunday, March 12 at 1 p.m. for the final game of the series in Bowling Green, Ky.
