MURRAY, Ky – On Friday the Miami University softball team defeated both Bellarmine University, 13-1 and Murray State University, 12-3 in day one of the Velvet Milkman Invitational.
Taylor Turner and
Brianna Pratt combined to allow four earned runs in 11 innings pitched to pick up a pair of wins, while
Allie Cummins went 4-for-5 with five RBI and
Maggie Murphy had seven RBI to go along with four hits on Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
- The Knight's struck first, tacking on a run in the top of the first inning on an RBI single, taking the lead 1-0.
- The RedHawks did not wait long to tie the game, 1-1. Karli Spaid scored in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Murphy.
- On a wild pitch in the second inning Adriana Barlow scored, grabbing the 2-1 lead for the RedHawks.
- Then, on a single RBI by Chloe Parks, Maddi Banks scored, increasing the lead to 3-1.
- Cummins then hit a single for an RBI, scoring Parks. Spaid then scored on an RBI from Murphy, widening the gap, 5-1.
- Cummins then walked with the bases loaded in the third inning, scoring Barlow. Kate Kobayashi then hit a double, scoring Parks. Banks also scored on an error, bringing the score to 9-1.
- Murphy homered, bringing Kobayashi and herself around to score. Reagan Bartholomew singled, scoring Shelby Kunkel. This brought the score to 12-1.
- In the bottom of the fourth Cummins doubled, driving in Spaid, to get the score to 13-1, which was ultimately the winning score for the RedHawks.
NOTES:
- Murphy, Cummins, Spaid, Parks, and Barlow all went 2-for-3 at the plate.
- Murphy earned four RBI.
- Turner did not allow a single extra base hit.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
- The RedHawks got the scoring started early in the top of the first on a single from Blaska that allowed Cummins to score, taking the 1-0 lead.
- Barlow then doubled, scoring Blaska and Murphy, tripling the lead, 3-0.
- The Racers added a run to the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the first. They then added another run with a sac fly, bringing the score to 3-2.
- In the top of the third Banks scored on an RBI single by Riley Coyne. Coyne then scored on an RBI single from Spaid, earning a 5-2 lead.
- In the bottom of the third the Racers shortened the deficit to 5-3 on an RBI double.
- Cummins started off the sixth inning with a homerun to take a 6-3 lead.
- Murphy followed with an RBI double to score Kobayashi. Bartholomew also hit an RBI double, allowing Logan Mueller to score, increasing the lead to 8-3.
- In the top of the final inning Cummins hit a sac fly to score Jenna Golembiewski. Murphy doubled, allowing Kobayashi and Spaid to score. Blaska then hit an RBI single, so that Dylan Scott could score, taking the lead to 12-3.
NOTES:
- Seven RedHawks recorded an RBI, with a total of 12 for the team.
- Pratt pitched the full game, allowing only one extra base hit.
