RedHawks Travel to Akron on Saturday

ON TAP: The Miami University women's basketball team heads to Akron on Saturday, Feb. 25, in search of its first three-game win streak of the year. Opening tip is slated for 2 p.m.

MIAMI'S BIG-3: The RedHawks have three of the top-12 scorers in the MAC, highlighted by Ivy Wolf (16.6, 6th), Peyton Scott (15.6, 9th) and Maddi Cluse (14.9, 12th). Combined, the trio scores on average 47 of Miami's 70 points per contest and Miami is 6-4 this season when the trio combines for at least 50 points in a game. On Wednesday the trio registered a season-high 66 points in the win over NIU.

TOE THE LINE: No one gets to the free throw line more in the Mid-American Conference than the RedHawks. Through 28 games, Miami has attempted 528 (18.9/game) free throws this season. Not only do the RedHawks get to the line ... they make them count. As a team, Miami is second in the conference in free throw percentage (75.6%). Individually, Ivy Wolf ranks first in the MAC (91.0%) and Peyton Scott is fifth (84.9%).

FAMILIAR FACES: Miami's DeUnna Hendrix and Akron's Melissa Jackson were teammates at Richmond during the 2003-04 season. The Spiders were 23-10 and advanced to the WNIT that year. Akron's Associate Head Coach, Colleen Day Henderson, has several Miami ties. She coached on a  pair of staffs for the RedHawks and after a four-year career as a player (2001-04), she was inducted into the Miami Hall of Fame in 2015.

GET OUT THE BROOMS: With Wednesday's 21 point victory over the NIU Huskies, the RedHawks secured their first season sweep of the year. In fact, the last time Miami swept a conference opponent was back during the 2018-19 season when Miami swept Akron, Bowling Green and Toledo.

RECORDS ARE MEANT TO BE BROKEN: In the win over NIU, the RedHawks shot 60.3% from the floor. The last time Miami shot at least 60% in a contest was back on Feb. 28, 2013 versus Kent State (66.0%).

ABOUT AKRON: Akron is 15-11 overall and 6-9 in conference play, but have dropped six of their last MAC contests. The Zips rank seventh in the MAC, scoring 68.8 points per contest and are led by Reagan Bass (17.3) and Molly Neitzel (11.2). The duo also ranks 1-2 in rebounds for the Zips.

SERIES WITH ZIPS: This will be the 63rd meeting between the two schools, with Miami holding a 39-23 series advantage. Akron has won the last seven contests and the RedHawks have not beaten the Zips since March 9, 2019.

ROUND TWO WITH UA: These same two teams played back on Jan. 7, with Akron coming away with a 77-66 victory. Sierra Morrow posted her first double-double as a RedHawk with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Ivy Wolf was tops with 17 points. Maddi Cluse added 16 and Peyton Scott chipped in 13.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A WEEK MAKES: Back on Feb. 15, the RedHawks dropped an 83-80 decision at Central Michigan. The loss moved the RedHawks to 4-9 in conference play and placed them ninth in the conference standings. After back-to-back wins, the RedHawks are now tied for fifth at 6-9 in MAC play.

WHAT CHANGED?:  Over the past two games Miami is averaging 80.0 points a game. They are shooting 55.3% from the floor and 40.0 from behind the arc. They are out-rebounding their opponents by 10.5 per game and have 38 assists to just 22 turnovers. Maddi Cluse is averaging 19.0 points and 12.5 rebounds and Peyton Scott has averaged 21.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists during the two-game win streak.

NOW "BOARD"ING: The RedHawks rank just ninth in the MAC in rebounding (35.4 boards/game) but, have out-rebounded 10 of their last 14 opponents, including +14 last Saturday in the win at Buffalo. Miami outrebounded the Huskies 33-26 on Wednesday night.

HUNGRY LIKE A WOLF: After an outstanding freshman campaign, where she averaged 12.6 points per contest,  sophomore Ivy Wolf has taken the next step in her career. Wolf is sixth in the MAC in scoring (16.6) and seventh in assists (3.7). She has scored at least 20 points in nine games this year.

GETTING A CLUE: After an up and down freshman season, where Maddi Cluse averaged 6.5 points per contest, the second-year RedHawk seems to have things figured out in 2022-23. Cluse currently ranks 12th in the MAC with a 14.9 scoring average. She is also fifth in rebounding (7.9). The sophomore has nine double-doubles this season (and one triple-double) after recording just two her freshman campaign. Miami is 7-2 this season when Cluse records a double-double.

MAGICAL MILESTONES: The RedHawks have had several individual moments during the 2022-23 season:
• Dec. 11 -- Ivy Wolf scored her 500th career point, the third fastest in program history to do so.
• Dec. 16 -- Peyton Scott scored her 1,500th career point.
• Dec. 16 -- Maddi Cluse recorded the second triple-double in program history, registering 18 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in an 82-56 win over Bradley. The last triple-double for Miami was from Linda Mallender on Dec. 14, 1984.
• Dec. 17 -- Peyton Scott secured her 500th career rebound, becoming just one of three RedHawks in program history to score 1,500 points and record 500 career rebounds.
• Feb. 8 -- Maddi Cluse scored her 500th career point in the win over WMU.

GREAT SCOTT: Senior guard Peyton Scott has accomplished a ton since arriving in Oxford, all while maintaining a 3.78 grade-point average and majoring in sports leadership and management.
• Scott suffered an ACL tear on March 5, 2022 at Akron and returned to play on Nov. 21, 2022 against Western Kentucky.
• She has scored 1,832 points and ranks fourth all-time on Miami's scoring list. She also scored 2,202 points in her high school career (4,034 total points over the past eight years).
• Scott was named to the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Preseason Award Watch List.
• Two seasons ago, she scored 30-plus points in five different games, including 39 versus Ball State, a new Millett Hall record. She has surpassed 30-plus points six different times in her career.
• She has scored in double figures 93 times in her career and has surpassed 20 points 35 different times.
• Named second-team All-MAC the past two seasons and was on the MAC All-Freshman team in 2019-20.
• Scott has started 105 of 108 games in her career.

SHOOTING STARS: Miami is having its best season shooting under Coach Hendrix. As a team, Miami is shooting 43.0% from the floor (previous best was 40.3% in 2021-22) and 34.1% from behind the arc (previous best was 29.2% in 2021-22). Miami currently ranks fourth in the MAC as a team in three-point percentage.

SAVING THE BEST FOR LAST: In Amani Freeman's first three years, she combined to score 134 points and pull down 90 rebounds ... TOTAL. This season alone, Freeman has scored 225 points and added 139 rebounds. She has scored in double figures 11 times in her career, 10 coming this season.
