Jada Scott had 11 points and freshman
Amber Tretter chipped in with 10, but the Miami University women's basketball team dropped a 60-48 decision to Vermont to open the 2023-24 season.
How it Happened:
- Both teams struggled offensively to begin the contest, knotted at 4-4 at the first media timeout. Vermont led 9-6 with four minutes left in the opening quarter before Tretter scored four straight and Núria Jurjo split a pair of defenders for a left-handed layup to give Miami a 12-9 lead. The Catamounts scored the final four of the quarter and led 13-12 after 10 minutes of play.
- Vermont outscored Miami 9-3 in the opening minutes of the second quarter to claim a 22-15 lead. A pair of free throws from Tretter and a step-back triple by Jada Scott shrunk the deficit to 22-20 with 6:08 left in the first half. Jada Scott hit her second three-pointer of the first half and sister Jadyn Scott's jump shot completed a 10-0 run for the RedHawks. Miami led 25-22 before Vermont scored the half's final four points for a 26-25 halftime advantage.
- Vermont opened the second half on a 9-2 run and led 35-27 with six minutes left in the third quarter. After a pair of Catamount free throws, Jurjo found Cori Lard for an open jumper on an inbounds play to cut the deficit to eight and Jada Scott's third triple of the contest pulled Miami to within 39-34 with 1:37 left in the third. Vermont led 41-36 with 10 minutes remaining.
- The Catamounts stretched their advantage to 12, opening the third quarter on a 7-0 run to force a quick Coach Box timeout. Lakresha Edwards drilled a triple with six minutes left in the contest to cut the margin to 48-39, but Miami could get no closer.
Game Notes:
- Miami recorded 17 bench points, compared to Vermont's two.
- The RedHawks held the Catamounts to 13.3% (2-15) shooting from behind the arc.
- Jada Scott had a team-high six rebounds.
