Neaton Earns First Shutout as Miami Blanks Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. — Logan Neaton made 20 saves to record his first career shutout and the Miami University hockey team posted a 2-0 win at Mercyhurst in non-conference action Sunday.

John Waldron and Matthew Barbolini scored for the RedHawks, who improved to 5-8-1 (0-6-0 NCHC). The Lakers fall to 4-7-2 (2-2-2 AHA).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • 11:09 1st (Miami 1-0) | Miami scored the only goal of the opening period. After Waldron maneuvered around multiple defenders and fired a shot wide from the left circle, Max Dukovac retrieved it along the boards and played it to William Hallén. Hallén fed it into the middle for Dukovac to tip across to Waldron, and Waldron buried a quick shot to put Miami up 1-0.
  • 15:08 3rd (Miami 2-0) | The RedHawks killed off a crucial penalty in the latter stages of the third period, and Barbolini gave them some breathing room with a goal as the Lakers' power play expired. The senior forward got his stick on the puck in the defensive zone to spark a 2-on-1 rush and ripped a shot past Mercyhurst's Owen Say after faking a pass, doubling Miami's lead.

GAME NOTES:
  • Waldron matched his career high with six shots on goal and collected the 25th point of his career.
  • Barbolini finished the weekend with a total of four points over the two games and now has a team-high eight goals on the year.
  • Blake Mesenburg was a perfect 10-for-10 on faceoffs.
  • Dukovac, Barbolini and Waldron were named the game's Three Stars.
  • Dukovac and Michael Feenstra each finished with +2 ratings, matching their career bests.
  • Miami out-shot Mercyhurst 31-20.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The RedHawks are off next weekend before hosting Minnesota Duluth for an NCHC series in Oxford Dec. 8-9. Puck drop on Friday, Dec. 8 is set for 7:05 p.m. at Steve "Coach" Cady Arena.
