OXFORD, Ohio — The Miami University volleyball team fell in five-set match to the University of Akron Friday night at Millett Hall. The Zips won by a score of 19-25, 24-26, 25-20, 27-25, 16-14. Miami moves to 5-23 (1-15 MAC) on the season, while Akron improves to 12-15 (7-9 MAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- At the start of the first set, no team led by more than two points until Miami brought the score to 10-7. With the scoring sitting at 14-10, Miami went on a 4-0 run after Ellie Hanson knocked down two kills from to spark the run. The Zips closed within three at 22-19, but the RedHawks closed the set out with a 25-19 win.
- Miami claimed an early 3-1 advantage after Maggie McCrary spiked the ball to the floor twice. The set was tied at 10 apiece following some initial back-and-forth. No team led by more than three points until the Zips took a 17-13 lead. Akron went on to stretch their lead to 19-14, but the RedHawks remained determined and stormed back to reclaim the lead at 22-21. The Red and White finished the set on a 12-5 run to win the second 26-24. Chelsea Williams recorded four late kills and a block to help Miami seal the win.
- The score stood at 7-7, approaching the midpoint of the third set. Akron looked to separate from the Red and White at 13-10. No team led by more than three points until Akron led 19-15. Miami came within two points thanks to Caroline Cermack putting the ball to the floor at 20-18. Although, the Zips finished the set 25-20.
- Akron built off of the previous set, taking an 8-4 lead at the start of the fourth. An attack error and a couple of Hanson kills knotted the score at 9-9. The Zips once again tried to pull away, but back-to-back kills from Williams kept the match tied at 13-13. Two kills from Lantz and a McCrary kill kept it tight at 19 apiece approaching the end of the set. Miami looked to claim the set at 24-23 but dropped 27-25.
- The Zips began the fifth set leading 6-2. The Red and White trailed by two at 8-6 after Hanson and Williams knocked down consecutive kills. Akron looked to finish off the Red and White at 14-10, but a pair of blocks and kills evened the score at 14-14. The Zips went on to finish off the final set with 16-14.
GAME NOTES:
- Hayden Hicks put up a career-high 60 assists and had a career-high 7 blocks
- Taylor Nomanson recorded the match-high 17 digs.
- Hanson reached 500 career digs.
