OXFORD, Ohio– The Miami University football team defeated Bowling Green 27-0 Saturday afternoon to remain unbeaten in Mid-American Conference play. The RedHawks (5-1, 2-0 MAC) posted their first shutout since 2007 and extended their longest winning streak in 20 years to five games.
Brett Gabbert completed 83% of his passes (15-18), throwing for 170 yards and two scores, and averaged better than five yards per carry. Miami held Bowling Green (2-4, 0-2 MAC) to 135 yards of total offense (63 rushing, 72 passing).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Miami received the opening kickoff and embarked on a methodical 17-play scoring drive to take a 7-0 lead. The RedHawks converted three third downs and one fourth down in a possession that lasted more than 11 minutes. Gabbert hit on all six of his pass attempts and Rashad Amos recorded eight carries on the drive, including a one-yard scoring plunge with 3:29 left in the quarter.
- The RedHawks doubled their advantage to 14-0 on a two-yard Gabbert touchdown strike to Nate Muersch in the back corner of the end zone with 52 seconds remaining in the first half. Miami capitalized on a crucial roughing-the-passer penalty on the third play of the drive, followed by 17-yard and 13-yard Gabbert runs. Javon Tracy caught a deflected pass to get the Red and White into the red zone, and a defensive pass interference flag two plays later set up Muersch's score.
- After Bowling Green missed a 46-yard field goal to begin the third quarter, Miami struck again on its first possession of the period. A big third-down conversion to Joe Wilkins Jr. moved the RedHawks into BGSU territory, and Kenny Tracy did the rest for the home team. After an eight-yard run and six-yard reception by the junior, he caught a short pass from Gabbert on the next play and raced 39 yards untouched into the end zone to break the game open.
- A Ty Wise interception gave the RedHawks excellent field position at the Bowling Green 36, leading to a Graham Nicholson field goal with nine seconds left in the third quarter. Nicholson split the uprights from 52 yards out to stretch Miami's lead to 24-0.
- With 3:21 to play, the RedHawks scored on their fourth consecutive drive. Nicholson buried a 30-yard field goal to make the score 27-0.
