Gus Ragland

Gus Ragland begins year three of coaching Miami's quarterbacks.

In just two years, Ragland has made his mark on the football program. Brett Gabbert, a two-time All-MAC performer under Ragland, earned first-team All-MAC accolades in 2024 after throwing for 2,900 yards and 21 touchdowns as the RedHawks advanced to their second-straight MAC title game performance.

In his first year working with the signal callers in 2023, Ragland helped Brett Gabbert earn third-team All-MAC honors. Gabbert, who suffered a season-ending injury in late Oct., was leading the MAC in both passing yards and touchdowns at the time of his injury. With Gabbert on the shelf, Ragland tutored Aveon Smith, who would help lead the RedHawks to their first MAC Championship since 2019, earning MAC Championship Offensive Player of the Game honors.

Prior to joining Miami, Ragland spent four seasons at Notre Dame. He began his career as an offensive analyst/assistant running back’s coach in 2019 and was a graduate assistant in 2020 and 2021, working primarily with wide receivers and tight ends. In 2022, the Cincinnati, Ohio native was an assistant quarterback’s coach and helped the Irish recruit the No. 6 class in the nation according to 247Sports.com.

Ragland flourished as Miami’s starting quarterback from 2016-18. He ranks sixth in school history with 6,306 passing yards, is fourth in completion percentage (60.2%) and fourth with 56 career passing touchdowns. He ranks behind just Zac Dysert and Ben Roethlisberger in total offense (7,108 yards) for a career.

After playing sparingly in 2015, Ragland tore his ACL the following spring. Miami began the 2016 season 0-6 before Ragland returned to help Miami become the first team in NCAA history to begin a season 0-6 and finish 6-6. He threw for 1,537 yards and 17 touchdowns (one interception) as the RedHawks advanced to the St. Petersburg Bowl, where Ragland was named MVP.

The dual-threat signal caller started nine games in 2017, throwing for 2,032 yards and 19 scores and added three more touchdowns on the ground. Ragland was named third-team All-MAC as a senior, finishing with 2,547 yards and 17 touchdowns to go along with seven rushing touchdowns.

Ragland graduated from Miami in 2018 with an engineering degree.
