OXFORD, Ohio – Claudia Negrete Garcia played hero for the Miami University field hockey team on Sunday afternoon, scoring both goals, including the game-winner in double overtime to take a 2-1 victory over Michigan State University. This moves the RedHawks to 11-7 on the season (5-1 MAC). The Spartans drop to 3-11 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- On a penalty corner in the first few minutes of the game Negrete Garcia scored with assists from Madison Workman and Berta Mata to grab a 1-0 lead. This marked double-digit goals on the season for Negrete Garcia with 10.
- The RedHawks held this lead through the end of the first half to head into the second with a 1-0 lead. Through the first half the RedHawks only allowed the Spartans one shot.
- During a penalty corner in the third with barely over a minute remaining the Spartans managed to tie the game at 1-1, which they held through the conclusion of the period.
- With 17 seconds remaining in regulation play, Isabelle Perese had a game-saving stop during a penalty corner to push the game into overtime.
- Through the first overtime period Miami battled to keep the score tied, having been handed two yellow cards and being at uneven strength with the Spartans. The two teams were headed into a second overtime.
- On a long run from just before mid field to just inside the circle, Negrete Garcia scored the game winning goal with just two-and-a-half minutes remaining in double overtime to grab the 2-1 win for the RedHawks.
