OXFORD, Ohio— The Miami University women's basketball team rallied from a double-digit second-half deficit to stun Kent State 84-76 in overtime Wednesday night at Millett Hall.
Ivy Wolf scored a game-high 25 points for the RedHawks (6-10, 1-2 MAC), while
Peyton Scott added 22 points, seven rebounds and seven steals before fouling out late in the fourth quarter.
Amani Freeman contributed 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds, with
Maddi Cluse adding 12 points as Miami handed Kent State (10-4, 2-1 MAC) its first conference loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Freeman converted a pair of early baskets to give Miami a four-point lead in the opening minutes, but KSU put together a 14-3 spurt to take a 19-10 advantage. Cluse closed the quarter with a strong move inside to trim the deficit to 19-14 after 10 minutes of play.
- The RedHawks pulled even at 19-19 two minutes into the second quarter, capping a 9-0 run with a three-pointer by Wolf from the left wing. After KSU responded with a 13-2 burst, Miami called timeout and put up points on three consecutive possessions to close what had been an 11-point margin to 36-28 at intermission.
- Miami cut the Golden Flashes' lead to three points midway through the third quarter at 39-36, but the visitors promptly stretched the score back to 48-38 with just over 12 minutes remaining in regulation. The RedHawks held Kent State to two made field goals in the third period, but still trailed 52-46 going to the fourth quarter.
- Wolf drained all three of her three-point attempts in the final quarter of regulation to spark the Miami offense down the stretch, including one on the opening possession to cut the KSU lead in half. Wolf's third triple of the frame made it 58-57 with four minutes remaining, and Miami finally pulled even at 62-all on a Freeman three-point play with 2:11 to go. Scott went 6-for-6 at the foul line over the final 90 seconds, but the Golden Flashes converted a half dozen free throws of their own to make it 68-68 heading to the extra session.
- Despite playing without Scott and Cluse in overtime, Miami never trailed again, with Wolf scoring on back-to-back trips to start the game's final five-minute stretch. Morrow followed with a three-pointer on the RedHawks' possession to give Miami a 75-70 cushion. Katey Richason pulled down four of her eight rebounds in the period to help the RedHawks hold Kent State at bay.
