OXFORD, Ohio— The Miami University volleyball team faced conference opponent Kent State in a five-set win Friday night, 27-25, 25-9, 18-25, 22-25, 15-8.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
In what was a hard-fought first set, Kent State took the first point and led by as many as four on three different occasions (13-9, 16-12, 19-15). The RedHawks would take their first lead of the game at 20-19, after multiple errors from the Golden Flashes and a
Maggie McCrary kill. Kent State responded to Miami's push by pulling ahead 25-24. Although
Allyson Severance was determined to close out the set, recording three kills in a row to win 27-25.
The second set began with close gameplay, as Miami led by one at a score of 5-4 early on. The RedHawks followed this by going on a 20-4 run, recording 16 total kills in the set. Miami scored the final six points of the match, Severance recording back-to-back service aces to help close out the set 25-9.
Kent State managed to take an early 5-2 lead in the third set. They continued this momentum throughout, pulling ahead by nine points when the score reached 19-10. The Red and White went on to find their own rhythm, going on a 7-2 run and brining the score within four at 21-17. Ultimately, the Golden Flashes finished the set with a 25-18 win.
Miami took the initial point and a quick 4-1 lead at the introduction of the fourth set. No team led by more than four points, until the set reached a score of 18-14 in Miami's favor. Shortly after, a coach's challenge from Kent State tied the set at 20-20, instead of 21-19. The Golden Flashes would go on to win the set, 25-22.
In the final set, each team came out strong. Miami led 8-7 halfway through the set when
Ellie Hanson scored two kills and
Gentry Warrick poured in an additional two service aces. This propelled the RedHawks to a 15-8 final set win.
NOTES:
- Severance recorded a game-high 21 kills and added three service aces.
- Lydia Harper tied her career-high and had a game-high of five blocks
