RedHawks go Undefeated in Chattanooga Classic

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.— The Miami University Volleyball team won a five-set match Saturday afternoon against Chattanooga to go undefeated in the Chattanooga Classic, 26-28, 25-16, 17-25, 25-18, 15-10. The RedHawks rise to 5-4 on the year and Chattanooga is now 4-6.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The match started off with a tough first-set, the score being tied on 14 different occasions. Ellie Hanson and Allyson Severance totaled a combined 15 kills in the first-set, leading the RedHawks on offense. Hayden Hicks and Lydia Harper were key in facilitating for the team, combining for a total of 17 assists. Chattanooga went on to close out the set 28-26.
The RedHawks started out hot in the second set, taking an 8-2 lead early on thanks to a kill from Maggie McCrary, a kill from Abby Stratford, two kills from Hanson, and a service ace from Hicks. Chattanooga closed within 2 points halfway through the set, but an additional two kills from McCrary and Stratford provided the momentum Miami needed, winning the set 25-16.
At the beginning of the third set Miami took a quick 5-0 lead after Brooke Cirigliano, Stratford, and Hanson recorded early kills. Later on, Chattanooga climbed back, tying the game at 11-11 and winning the set 25-17.
Chattanooga took a 6-3 lead at the start of the fourth set. Miami then clawed their way back, tying the game at 9-9 after back-to-back kills from McCrary and Caroline Cermack. The RedHawks went on to lead the rest of the set, winning 25-18.
Miami jumped out 6-3 in the beginning of the fifth set, Chattanooga followed this by going on a run and tying the game at 8-8. Severance then recorded three of her five kills in the set to propel the RedHawks to a 15-10 victory.
NOTES:
Miami takes on local rivals Xavier University on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. at home and the University of Cincinnati on Friday, Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. on the road. The RedHawks follow this with conference play at Ohio University on Friday, Sept. 23. and Saturday, Sept. 24.

- Hicks recorded a game-high of 37 assists and Harper posted 21 more.
- Brooke Jackson led the team with 25 digs, Hicks added 18, Cermack notched 14, and Severance added 14.
