RedHawks Edged by Roos in Five Sets

PEORIA, Ill.—A hard-fought effort came up just short as the Miami University volleyball team (0-2) was edged in a five-set battle with Kansas City (1-0) on Friday evening at the Bradley CEFCU Invitational, 25-20, 20-25, 25-23, 19-25, 11-15.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Hayden Hicks served up an ace for the opening point of the match. Kansas City built a 7-3 lead, but Miami climbed back and used a 5-0 run that included back-to-back kills from Brooke Jackson and another Hicks service ace to notch a 14-12 advantage and a lead it would not relinquish. The RedHawks pushed their lead to six, 22-16, and went on to claim a 25-20 win in the opening set.
- A Jackson service ace along with three-straight kills from Abby Stratford helped Miami take a quick 7-0 lead in the second set. The RedHawks pushed their lead to 10 off a block by Maggie McCrary and Hicks, 12-2. KC used a 9-1 run to claim a 17-15 advantage. Two more Stratford kills gave Miami an 18-17 edge, but the Roos took the second set, 25-20.
- It was a tight third set with neither team leading by more than one until KC took an 11-9 edge. The Roos used a 7-0 run to push ahead and eventually led by eight, 21-13. Miami kept chiseling away and put together a 7-0 run to close out the set to seize a 25-23 win in the third stanza. Gentry Warrick served up two aces during the final stretch.
- Kansas City opened up a 9-3 lead in the fourth set and did not look back. The Roos led by as many as 11, but Miami used a 4-0 spurt to close within three late in the set, 21-18. Kansas City went on to send the match to a fifth set with a 25-19 win in the fourth stanza.
- The Roos took a 4-1 lead in the fifth, but Miami climbed back to within one off an Ellie Hanson kill, 6-5. KC extended its lead to five, 13-8, but a kill from Allyson Severance highlighted a 3-0 spurt to put Miami within two. The Roos went on to claim the match with a 15-11 win in the fifth set.
- Stratford paced the RedHawks with 14 kills and added 10 digs and two blocks.
- Hicks posted 40 assists, nine digs and two service aces.
- Warrick added three service aces and four blocks.
- Margo Lawson led Miami with 18 digs.
