BLACKSBURG, Va. — The Miami University softball team's stay in the NCAA tournament ended with a narrow 5-4 loss to host Virginia Tech this weekend. In a game that started late Saturday night and didn't end until the early hours of Sunday morning, the RedHawks (40-17-1) took a 4-1 lead into the fourth inning before the No. 3 Hokies (43-8) rallied to advance to the regional final.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Virginia Tech scored once in the opening frame, the RedHawks came back with two runs in the second inning to go on top. Lily Wilmot led off with a single, and after Logan Mueller came in to pinch run, two consecutive groundouts moved Mueller to third. Chloe Parks came through with a two-out RBI single to right field, and Karli Spaid promptly followed with a double down the left field line to score Parks.
- Miami extended its advantage in the third inning. Allie Cummins worked the count before driving a single into right field. That set the stage for Riley Coyne, who ripped a home run to right center on the next pitch to make it 4-1.
- The Hokies responded with a pair of two-run homers in the fourth to re-take the lead and held on for the 5-4 final score.
MIAMI GAME NOTES
- Coyne, who also hit a home run in the RedHawks' first game of the day vs. St. Francis (Pa.), finishes with 12 on the season.
- Center fielder Kate Kobayashi made a highlight-reel diving catch in the third inning to rob her former team of a certain extra-base hit.
- Taylor Turner (3.1 innings) and Brianna Pratt (3.2 innings) split time in the circle for Miami.
- Spaid picked up her 70th RBI of the year, the highest single-season total by any player in program history.
