
RedHawks Hold Off Huskies For Third Straight Win

DeKALB, Ill. — Jonathan Brand allowed one run in six innings, Cole Andrews blasted a two-run homer, and the Miami University baseball team defeated Northern Illinois 4-2 Friday afternoon in Mid-American Conference play.
The RedHawks improved to 10-13, 6-6 MAC and picked up their third consecutive win. NIU moves to 4-19, 4-7 MAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The RedHawks got on the board in the top of the first inning. JJ Woolwine led off with a single and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Zach MacDonald, putting the visitors up 1-0.
- Miami made it 3-0 in the fourth inning. Brian Zapp's two-out single and ensuing stolen base set the table for Andrews' two-run shot to left field.
- NIU answered back with a leadoff homer in the fifth inning, cutting the Miami advantage to 3-1.
- The Huskies added an unearned run in the eighth to make it 3-2, but reliever Luke Leverton recorded a key bases-loaded strikeout to preserve the RedHawks' lead.
- Miami added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, as Andrews was hit by a pitch, advanced around the bases on a Stephen Krause groundout and MacDonald single, and eventually came in to score on a Northern Illinois error.
MIAMI GAME NOTES
- Zapp stole multiple bases for the fourth consecutive game.
- Andrews now has a team-high five home runs and a team-high 24 RBI.
- Brand struck out four Huskies and only allowed a single walk, improving to 4-1 on the mound this season.
- Patrick Mastrian IV pitched a scoreless ninth to record the save.
