OXFORD, Ohio—Five home runs highlighted a 10-2, five-inning win against Kent State University for the Miami University softball team on Saturday afternoon at Miami Softball Field. The win opened Mid-American Conference play for the RedHawks who improve to 8-10 on the season and 1-0 in league play. The Golden Flashes drop to 6-10 and 0-1 in MAC action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Karli Spaid blasted a solo home run over the centerfield fence to put Miami on the board in the first inning. A Lily Wilmot RBI single to right field then plated Kate Kobayashi to give Miami at quick 2-0 lead.
- A two-run homer by Allie Cummins that also scored Chloe Parks extended the Miami lead to 4-0 in the second inning.
- KSU cut into the RedHawk lead in the third, scoring two in the top of the inning, but Miami came right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning on an Adriana Barlow two-run homer that also scored Holly Blaska.
- After a scoreless fourth inning, Maggie Murphy launched a three-run homer over the centerfield fence to push the Miami lead to 9-2. With two outs, Parks stepped to the plate and belted a solo home run over the centerfield fence to clinch the game in five innings for the RedHawks, 10-2
NOTES:
- It was the second five-inning, run-rule win for the RedHawks this season.
- Pitcher Courtney Vierstra picked up the win in the circle, throwing 5.0 innings and giving up just one hit, while striking out eight KSU hitters.

Miami and Kent State return to action to complete the series on Sunday, March 20 with a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
