Maier Breaks Conference Record at Day 3 of MAC Championships

A conference record-breaking finish from Nicole Maier and multiple solid performances across other events helped push the Miami University swimming & diving team back into third place on the third day of the Mid-American Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Championships on Friday, Feb. 25, in Bowling Green. The RedHawks now sit at 289.5 points behind the University of Akron and the University at Buffalo.
After a series of preliminaries, the day's finals kicked off with the 100 butterfly. Honor Brodie-Foy landed in seventh place with a time of 54.16, with additional top 20 finishes for Madeline Padavic (54.60) and McKenzie Reid (54.80), both of whom bested their seed times.
Following this was the 400 individual medley. Maier's second individual appearance of the tournament saw her not only coming in first with an NCAA qualifying time of 4:08.94, but breaking the MAC record of 4:11.30 the sophomore had set just last year. Maier was assisted in the event by Alexandra Spaczay (4:22.47) in tenth and Emily Rinker (4:23.73) in eleventh.
In the 200 freestyle, Erin Szczupakiewicz picked up points for the RedHawks with a time of 1:50.28, while the 100 breaststroke saw a ninth place finish for Sara Lahrach-Sanchez (1:03.02) and top 20 finishes for Anna Martin (1:03.73) and Sam Sutton (1:03.95). Padavic and Angelina Cakuls both placed within the top 10 of the 100 backstroke, with Padavic (53.91) in fifth and Cakuls (54.15) in sixth.
The day's events finished off with the 400 medley relay. Miami's relay team picked up a third place finish, coming in with a combined time of 3:38.65.
The MAC Women's Swimming & Diving Championships conclude Saturday, Feb. 26, with the remaining seven events. Preliminaries kick off at 10:30 a.m., with finals starting at 6:40 p.m. for the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, three meter diving and 400 freestyle relay events.
