OXFORD, Ohio - Senior Night ended in triumph for the Miami University hockey team as the RedHawks closed out their home series against No. 8/9 Minnesota Duluth with a 4-0 shutout victory on Saturday, Feb. 26.
Miami (7-23-2, 4-17-1 NCHC) took the lead early in the first period on
Brian Silver's first career goal and held onto it the whole game. Seniors
Chase Gresock and
Matt Barry scored in the second period, with Gresock adding an empty-netter in the final minutes.
Ludvig Persson's 44 saves helped prevent the Bulldogs (16-14-4, 9-9-4 NCHC) from getting on the board.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 4:05 1st (Miami 1-0) | It only took Miami one shot on goal to take an early lead. Silver intercepted the puck in the RedHawks' zone and went the length of the ice for an unassisted breakaway goal to put Miami on top 1-0.
- 7:53 2nd (Miami 2-0) | A trio of Miami seniors teamed up to double the home team's lead. Derek Daschke hit the puck forward in an attempt to get it out of the RedHawks' zone, with Barry nudging it ahead to Gresock. Gresock drove up the ice and beat UMD goaltender Ryan Fanti to make it 2-0.
- 12:16 2nd (Miami 3-0) | Miami took advantage of a second-period power play to secure another goal. PJ Fletcher set up Matthew Barbolini near the goal post, and he fed Barry perfectly on the far side of the crease for the finish and a 3-0 margin.
- 18:29 3rd (Miami 4-0) | The RedHawks put the game out of reach with an empty net goal late in the third period. Fighting for the puck in the RedHawks' zone, Barbolini gained possession and knocked it over to Gresock, who buried the shot from inside his own blue line for a 4-0 win.
