
Maier Claims Victory in Second Day of MAC Women's Swimming Championships

The second day of the Mid-American Conference Women's Championship saw the Miami University women's swimming and diving team continue to put in solid performances despite falling a place in overall standings on Thursday, Feb. 24, in Bowling Green. The RedHawks kicked off the day with Nicole Maier winning the 500 freestyle for the second year in a row. The team also saw high rankings in the 50 freestyle and the 200 freestyle relay which closed out the day. Miami moves to fourth place going into day three with a 153.5 score, with Eastern Michigan University moving up to third and University of Akron and University at Buffalo remaining in first and second.

After two rounds of preliminaries, Miami started the day's finals with three swimmers earning points for the school in the 500 freestyle. At the top of the podium was Maier, whose NCAA qualifying time of 4:44.19 put her almost six seconds faster than the second place finisher. Erin Szczupakiewicz, also in the A group, came in sixth place with a time of 4:54.80, and Katheryn Antonowich picked up points for the team as well with a 4:56.86 time.

The remaining individual events saw RedHawk swimmers continuing to pick up points for the school. In the 200 individual medley, Maggie Stock (2:04.67) and Anna Martin (2:04.68) both landed in the top 20. The 50 freestyle had Honor Brodie-Foy competing in the A group, finishing sixth with a time of 23.00, with McKenzie Reid also earning points with a time of 23.28.

The day ended with Miami taking third in the 200 freestyle relay with a combined time of 1:30.69. Each swimmer earned solid splits, including Maier (22.71), Brodie-Foy (22.41), Reid (23.04) and Madeline Padavic (22.53).

The RedHawks continue through the MAC Women's Championships on Friday, Feb. 25. The penultimate day will see six finals including the 100 butterfly, the 400 individual medley, the 200 freestyle, the 100 breaststroke, the 100 backstroke and the 400 medley relay.
