ON TAP: The Miami University women's basketball team hosts Vermont on Friday morning at 10:15 a.m. as the RedHawks welcome 1,400 youth between the ages of kindergarten and fifth grade to Millett Hall.
HUNGRY LIKE A WOLF: After averaging just over 10 points per contest in Miami's first 20 games of the 2021-22 season,
Ivy Wolf averaged 16.6 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists over her last nine games to close out the year and scored 17 points in the season opener versus Xavier. She added a career-high six steals as well.
GETTING A CLUE: After an up and down freshman season, where
Maddi Cluse averaged 6.5 points per contest, the second-year RedHawk seems to have things figured out in 2022-23. Cluse led all scorers with 24 points in the season opener versus Xavier. She added six rebounds and was 10-for-16 shooting on the night.
WAITING ON PEYTON: Peyton Scott suffered a knee injury in the last game of the 2021-22 campaign and should be ready to return soon. Scott, a preseason first-team All-MAC selection this year, averaged 19.2 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists per contest last season.
XAVIER RECAP: The Miami University women's basketball team dropped a 87-68 decision to Xavier in the season opener for both teams last Monday.
Maddi Cluse scored a career-high 24 points to lead the RedHawks (0-1).
Ivy Wolf chipped in 17 points and added a career-high six steals.
NEW FACES, NEW PLACES: Miami has three new additions from last season on the roster.
Riley Neal is the lone freshman and is joined by transfers
Sierra Morrow (Bradley) and
Jessie Dai (Odessa College). Neal averaged 21.6 points and 10 rebounds per game last season as a senior at North Oldham High School in Prospect, Ky., while Morrow averaged 6.4 points, 5.4 rebounds and was 70th in the nation with 1.6 blocks per contest. Dai averaged 11.3 points and 4.5 rebounds last season at Odessa College.
MINUTE-BY-MINUTE: With some many new faces versus Xavier, several RedHawks posted career-highs in minutes played on Monday night.
Sydney Watkins played 28 minutes (career-high was 9),
Katey Richason played 23 minutes (career-high was 22) and
Clare Chambers added 23 minutes (career-high was 3)
ABOUT VERMONT: Vermont opened the season with an 86-49 loss at No. 11 Indiana on Nov. 8. Emma Utterback recorded 19 points, four assists and four rebounds in the loss. Delaney Richason (sister of Miami's
Katey Richason) scored eight points in 30 minutes of action.
SERIES WITH VERMONT: This will be the first meeting between the two schools.
GREAT SCOTT: Senior guard
Peyton Scott has accomplished a ton since arriving in Oxford, all while maintaining a 3.78 grade-point average and majoring in sports leadership and management.
• She has scored 1,441 points and ranks ninth all-time on Miami's scoring list.
• Scott was named to the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Preseason Award Watch List.
• Two seasons ago, she scored 30-plus points in five different games, including 39 versus Ball State, a new Millett Hall record. She has surpassed 30-plus points six different times in her career.
• She has scored in double figures in 50 of her last 53 contests.
• Named second-team All-MAC the past two seasons and was on the MAC All-Freshman team in 2019-20.
• Scott started the first 83 games of her career at Miami before missing the season opener versus Xavier.
NOT YOUR TYPICAL WALK-ON: Fans would be surprised to know that
Clare Chambers is a walk-on for the RedHawks. In the season opener, Chambers recorded career-bests in points(9) rebounds (3) and minutes played (23) versus the Musketeers.
GIVE HER A HAND: Senior
Amani Freeman missed 17 games last season with a hand injury, but is completely healthy entering the season. Last year she opened with 10 points and four rebounds at Valpo and added nine points and four blocks at Purdue in 24 minutes of action before exiting with the hand injury. The senior returned late in the season to score nine points and five rebounds against BGSU.
WE'RE GOING STREAKING: Sophomore
Ivy Wolf has currently made 19 straight foul shots, dating back to last season. She made her final three free throws versus Ohio (Mar. 2, 2022), was 10-of-10 at Akron (Mar. 5, 2022) and was a perfect 6-of-6 on Monday versus Xavier.
