No. 18 WMU Tops RedHawks 5-2

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — No. 18/18 Western Michigan used three goals and two assists from Jason Polin to top the Miami University hockey team 5-2 Saturday evening. Red Savage and Axel Kumlin scored for Miami (4-5-1, 0-4-0 NCHC), while Ludvig Persson made 25 stops in net. The Broncos' season record moves to 7-4-0, 2-0-0 NCHC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 14:05 1st (WMU 1-0) | Polin started the scoring for the home team when Ryan McAllister tipped the puck toward the goalpost from behind the net and Polin was able to get just enough of it to poke it past Persson and across the goal line.
  • 2:23 2nd (Miami 1-1) | The RedHawks evened the score with a 4-on-4 goal early in the second period. Max Dukovac used a collection of spin moves along the boards to play keepaway from WMU, finally finding Hampus Rydqvist at the right point with a diagonal pass. Rydqvist set up Red Savage in close with a textbook feed for an easy redirect to make it 1-1.
  • 3:42 2nd (WMU 2-1) | WMU went back on top with a goal just seconds after a Miami penalty expired. Max Sasson quickly skated the puck into the attacking zone, finding McAllister on his left. McAllister connected with Polin in close for a 2-1 Bronco lead.
  • 7:40 2nd (WMU 3-1) | Polin picked up a hat trick by ripping a hard shot as he trailed the play that was initially ruled no goal. After a video review a few minutes later, the officials determined the puck had actually gone in before bouncing back out of the goal. McAllister and Sasson had assists on the play for WMU.
  • 8:35 3rd (WMU 4-1) | Western made it 4-1 in the third period. Polin sent it to Sasson, who fed it across from the left side. Daniel Hilsendager got a pair of close-range shots off, with the second one finding the net to give WMU a three-goal lead.
  • 11:35 3rd (Miami 4-2) | Miami responded three minutes later with a power-play goal. John Waldron found Thomas Daskas with a pass along the end boards, and Daskas fired it out to Kumlin at the left point. He ripped a deep shot into the top of the net, beating WMU's Cameron Rowe.
  • 19:19 3rd (WMU 5-2) | With both teams shorthanded due to penalties and the Miami net empty, Polin got loose for a breakaway opportunity in the final minute and laid the puck off for Sasson to tap in and finish the scoring.

NOTES
  • Kumlin's goal was the first of his college career.
  • Dukovac's assist was his team-leading sixth of the year.
  • Daskas recorded his first point of the season.
  • Ryan Savage had a game-high five shots on goal.
  • Persson started his 27th consecutive game in net for Miami.
