LOWELL, Mass.— The Miami University hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision at No. 15/15 UMass Lowell Saturday night to finish with a weekend split in the two-game series.
Ryan Savage and
PJ Fletcher scored their first goals of the season for the RedHawks (2-1-1), while
Ludvig Persson made 35 saves in the Miami net. The River Hawks got a pair of goals from Carl Berglund and improve to 2-1-0 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 6:53 1st (Miami 1-0) | The RedHawks jumped on top early, taking advantage of the game's first power play. Red Savage and Matthew Barbolini combined to set up a scoring chance in close, and pinpoint passing from Barbolini to Red Savage to Ryan Savage resulted in the elder Savage lighting the lamp for a 1-0 lead.
- 9:24 2nd (UMass Lowell 1-1) | UML leveled the score midway through the second period. A RedHawk clearing attempt didn't quite get out of the zone, and Marek Korencik was able to track down the puck near the blue line and fire it from deep, with the puck redirecting past Persson. Jon McDonald was credited with an assist.
- 0:34 3rd (UMass Lowell 2-1) | The River Hawks took the lead in the first minute of the third period. UML was able to keep possession in the offensive zone after a Miami penalty expired at the 0:21 mark, and passes from Jake Stella and Brian Chambers eventually set up Berglund for the go-ahead tally.
- 2:08 3rd (UMass Lowell 3-1) | UML found the back of the net again less than two minutes later. Fillip Fornaa Svensson's power play goal off assists from Chambers and Berglund made it 3-1 in favor of the home team.
- 12:02 3rd (UMass Lowell 4-1) | The River Hawks struck once more to break the game open, capitalizing on a quick-developing 3-on-3 opportunity. Svensson dropped it off to a trailing Berglund to make it 4-1. Chambers picked up his third assist of the evening on the play.
- 13:09 3rd (Miami 4-2) | Miami responded just over a minute later to trim the margin to 4-2. After Jack Clement sent a long diagonal pass ahead to Ryan Savage, Fletcher took a feed from Savage and finished a one-timer past UML goaltender Gustavs Davis Grigals to conclude the scoring.
NOTES:
- Ryan Savage recorded his first multi-point game since Nov. 26, 2021 vs. LIU and was named the game's Third Star.
- Barbolini extended his point streak to four games with the first-period assist.
