Miami Drops Three-Set Match to Western Michigan

KALAMAZOO, Mich.— The Miami RedHawks (6-10) fell in a three-set loss Friday night against Western Michigan (12-6), 15-25, 14-25, 17-25.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The first set began with back-and-forth gameplay, with Western Michigan taking the opening point. A service error by the Broncos followed by a service ace by Ellie Hanson gave the RedHawks an early 2-1 lead. Shortly after, the Broncos started to respond but a pair of kills from Gentry Warrick would help Miami maintain its lead at 7-5. Western Michigan would then tie the game at 8-8 and ultimately go on to win the set 25-15.

The Broncos pulled ahead 8-2 at the start of the second set. Allyson Severance recorded two kills and Maggie McCrary added one, but the Broncos maintained their six-point lead at 11-5. Western Michigan continued to build off this momentum throughout and went on to finish with a 25-14 win.

The score was 2-2 early on in the third set, with McCrary and Brooke Jackson each recording kills for the RedHawks. The Broncos followed this up by going on a 6-0 run and taking an 8-2 lead. Western Michigan was able to extend this lead to 21-11 as the end of the set approached. Miami did not give in, closing the gap after a few attack errors by the Broncos, a kill from Jackson, and a kill from Hanson brought the score to 21-15. Western Michigan went on to close out the set 25-17.
