OXFORD, Ohio— The RedHawks (6-18) dropped a three-set match to Ball State (19-6), 15-25, 18-25, 20-25.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The opening set included close game-play, Ball State attempted to pull away early leading 2-0. A service error from the Cardinals, followed by a service ace from
Ellie Hanson tied the set at 2-2. No team led by more than two points until Ball State took a 7-4 lead. The RedHawks fought to stay within striking distance, although Ball State finished the set with a 25-15 win.
The Cardinals got off to a hot start at the beginning of the second set, pulling ahead 11-3. Miami then stormed back, outscoring Ball State 9-2 to trail by one at 13-12. A kill from
Brooke Jackson sparked the run. Later on,
Allyson Severance and
Hayden Hicks contributed a pair of service aces. Ball State attempted to pull away once again, taking a three-point lead at 17-14. A kill from Severance and service ace from
Jacquelyn Krumnauer brought Miami back within one at 17-16. Despite the momentum shift, the Cardinals were able to maintain their lead and win the set 25-18.
The score was tied 2-2 at the start of the third set. Miami then went on to take a 5-2 lead thanks to numerous kills from Hanson, Severance and
Maggie McCrary. Ball State answered, retaking the lead at 7-6. The Cardinals then found their rhythm, extending this lead to 5 points at 13-8. Two attack errors from Ball State and an
Abby Stratford kill closed the lead within two points at 13-11. Ball State responded with a 7-2 run to take a 20-13 lead. Ultimately, the Cardinals closed the set with a 25-20 win.
