MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – On Friday afternoon, the Miami University field hockey team shut out Central Michigan University 6-0. The win brings the RedHawks to 9-6 on the season and 5-1 in Mid-American Conference competition. The defeat brings the Chippewas to 0-6 in the MAC and 2-15 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Less than seven minutes into the first quarter, during a penalty corner, Claudia Negrete Garcia scored, giving the RedHawks a 1-0 lead. She was assisted by Paula Navarro.
- With under three minutes remaining in the quarter, Negrete Garcia scored again, bringing the score to 2-0, which the RedHawks held through the end of the quarter.
- During a penalty corner one minute into the second quarter, Kennedy Vinson scored her first goal of the season, taking the RedHawks' lead to 3-0.
- The quarter ended without a change in the 3-0 score. At the half the RedHawks were outshooting the Chippewas 26-4.
- Less than four minutes into the third quarter, Paula Peña Martinez scored, bringing the lead to 4-0.
- During a penalty corner, with seconds to go in the quarter, Luli Rosso scored, granting the RedHawks a 5-0 lead, which was held through the end of the quarter.
- During a penalty corner with less than eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Mary Kate Barbee scored her first goal of the season, increasing the RedHawks lead to 6-0. She was assisted by Vinson and Macy McHale.
- The RedHawks held their lead through the end of the competition, shutting out the Chippewas with a 6-0 final score. The RedHawks took a school-record 48 shots, outshooting CMU 48-9.
