RedHawks Defeat Kent State, 2-1

OXFORD, Ohio – On Friday afternoon the Miami University field hockey team downed Kent State University 2-1. The win brings the RedHawks to 4-1 in the Mid-American Conference and 8-6 overall. The loss drops the Golden Flashes to 4-1 in MAC competition and 6-6 overall.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After a back-and-forth first quarter, the score remained tied 0-0.
  • A minute and a half into the second quarter Luli Rosso scored her second goal of the season, giving the RedHawks a 1-0 lead. She deflected a long pass by Claudia Negrete Garcia.
  • After a dramatic second quarter with two green and two yellow cards on Miami and one green and one yellow card on Kent State, the RedHawks held the 1-0 lead at the half.
  • On a penalty stroke less than five minutes into the third quarter, the Golden Flashes scored, tying the game 1-1.
  • The 1-1 tie remained through the end of the third quarter.
  • With just under four minutes remaining in the game, Paula Peña Martinez scored during a penalty corner, her tenth of the season, granting the RedHawks a 2-1 lead. She was assisted by Macy McHale and Madison Workman.
  • The RedHawks held the lead through the end of the competition, defeating the Golden Flashes 2-1.

The RedHawks face MAC opponent Central Michigan University next Friday, Oct. 21 at 3 p.m. in Mount Pleasant, Mich.
