No. 5 Denver Gets Past Miami in OT

OXFORD, Ohio - Red Savage and Hampus Rydqvist each scored two goals for Miami, but No. 5/5 Denver rallied past the RedHawks 5-4 in overtime Friday night.

Ludvig Persson made 40 saves for Miami (4-19-2, 1-13-1 NCHC), which earned a point in the conference standings. Cole Guttman scored twice late in the third period to help the Pioneers improve to 17-5-1, 10-3-0 NCHC, with Mike Benning netting the game-winning goal in the extra period.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • 11:54 1st (Denver 1-0) | Denver struck first, taking advantage of a power play opportunity midway through the first period to start the scoring. Passes between Brett Stapley, Massimo Rizzo and Cameron Wright put the Pioneers in position in Miami's zone, with a shot from Wright just crossing the goal line before bouncing off the right pipe. A quick review confirmed the goal for Denver.
  • 14:54 1st (Miami 1-1) | The RedHawks didn't wait long to respond, picking up their first goal of the game just three minutes later. After two tripping calls put Miami in a five-on-three power play situation, a faceoff win allowed the puck to move from Bray Crowder to Matt Barry, who sent it toward the net. Rydqvist finished the job, steering it in just before the end of the first penalty and tying up the game 1-1.
  • 15:09 1st (Miami 2-1) | It only took 15 seconds for Miami to find the back of the net a second time and take its first lead of the game. With one penalty still in effect, the RedHawks took control of the puck immediately, sending it once again between Crowder, Barry and Rydqvist, who shot it up and in for his second goal of the period.
  • 18:29 1st (Denver 2-2) | Denver answered back with another power play goal, as Wright got on the board for the second time. Stapley and Rizzo set up the play, with Wright making the decisive shot just under Persson's glove to tie things up at 2-2.
  • 19:45 1st (Miami 3-2) | The RedHawks closed out the first period on top, securing the first even strength goal of the game. Derek Daschke kept the puck in the attacking zone, with Matthew Barbolini taking advantage to feed Red Savage as he crashed the net. Savage was able to stay with the play and jam in his second attempt to give Miami a 3-2 lead.
  • 0:23 3rd (Miami 4-2) | After a relatively quiet second period, Miami came out swinging in the third, picking up the first goal of the period on the first play. Bringing a faceoff win into Denver's zone, the RedHawks got the puck to Alec Capstick, who shot from the left point toward the net. Barbolini was able to redirect it across the crease to Red Savage, who slid it inside the post to pick up his second goal of the game and move Miami's lead to 4-2.
  • 16:57 3rd (Denver 4-3) | Denver came back to lessen the gap late in the third period. After a cross-checking call on both teams, the Pioneers pulled their goalie to create a five-on-four situation. Moving the puck between Carter Savoie, Sean Behrens and Guttman, Denver was able to grab a goal and bring the score to 4-3.
  • 19:49 3rd (Denver 4-4) | The Pioneers broke through in the final seconds of regulation, scoring once again with an extra attacker. A deflected attempt that fell behind Miami's net bounced from Carter Mazur to Bobby Brink, who sent it over to Guttman for the equalizer.
  • 3:03 OT (Denver 5-4) | DU earned the extra point in the conference standings with a win in the overtime period, as Guttman fed Benning on a two-on-one break to finish the scoring.

GAME NOTES:
  • Barbolini, Barry, Crowder, and Savage all equaled career highs with two points apiece, while Rydqvist recorded the first multi-point game of his career.
