ON TAP: The Miami University women's basketball team looks to snap a three-game losing streak on Wednesday, Jan. 12 with a home contest versus Akron. Opening tip is set for 7 p.m.
NEW YEAR, NEW RESULTS: The RedHawks are 4-6 on the year, already matching last year's win total (went 4-20 last season). Miami got its fourth win of the season last year on Feb. 27.
WAITING GAME: Since playing at Purdue on December 19, the RedHawks have played just one, an 88-83 loss versus Buffalo on Jan. 1. Miami had the Ohio contest on Dec. 29, along with a pair of games last week postponed.
COMEBACK FALLS SHORT VERSUS BUFFALO: Maddi Cluse,
Jada Duckett, and
Edyn Battle all posted career-high scoring totals, but Miami dropped an 88-83 decision to Buffalo in the RedHawks' Mid-American Conference opener Saturday afternoon at Millett Hall.
Peyton Scott led Miami (4-6, 0-1 MAC) with 18 points to pace five RedHawks in double figures. Cluse added 17 points and eight rebounds, while Duckett chipped in 14 points and eight boards. Battle had 13 points and
Katie Davidson contributed 10 in her first start of the season. Scott had a team-high seven assists. Buffalo (8-4, 2-0 MAC) never trailed in the game, but Miami whittled away a 17-point deficit to a single possession in the final minutes before running out of time.
BALANCING ACT: While
Peyton Scott (19.2) is getting a majority of the offensive attention, Miami has a total of eight players averaging at least 4.3 points per game this season. Last year, just four RedHawks averaged over 4.0 points per game.
NEW FACES, NEW PLACES: Miami has six additions to the RedHawks in 2021-22 that are contributing numbers to Miami's success. In all,
Ivy Wolf,
Maddi Cluse,
Edyn Battle,
Tajah Foster-Walker,
Jordan Tuff and
Katey Richason are combining for 37.3 points and 18.1 rebounds per game.
ABOUT AKRON: The Zips are 5-4 on the year and 2-1 in conference play with wins over Kent State (62-61) and Bowling Green (79-69). Jordyn Dawson is tops on the team at 18.0 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Dawson is the lone Zip in double-figure scoring.
SERIES WITH THE ZIPS: Wednesday marks the 58th meeting between the two schools with the RedHawks leading the all-time series 37-20. Akron has won each of the last four contests and Miami has not beaten the Zips since March 9, 2019, a 66-49 victory in Oxford, Ohio.
WELCOME BACK: Akron Associate Head Coach Collen Day Henderson was a four-year letterwinner with the RedHawks and had two different stints on the coaching staff in Oxford Ohio. Day is a 2015 Miami Hall of Fame member after averaging 11.1 points and 7.0 rebounds per game in her career.
GREAT SCOTT: Junior guard
Peyton Scott has accomplished more than most through just over two years of play.
• Has scored 1,076 points and ranks 24th all-time on Miami's scoring list.
• She currently ranks fifth in the MAC in scoring (19.2), 14th in rebounding (6.4), fourth in assists (4.6), seventh in field goal percentage (.465), 14th in steals (1.6) and 17th in three-point percentage (.370).
• Last season alone, she scored 30-plus points in five different games, including 39 versus Ball State, a new Millett Hall record.
• She had a stretch last season from Feb. 3-Feb. 13 in which she scored 30-plus points in four straight games, the first RedHawk in school history to accomplish such a feat.
• In her last 42 contests, Scott has more 30 point games (5) then under 10 point games (3).
CLUSE ENOUGH: Freshman
Maddi Cluse is coming off arguably her best game as a RedHawk, scoring 17 points, while adding eight rebounds versus Buffalo. In her young career she has already scored in double-digits four different occasions and had a career-high 11 rebounds against Western Kentucky.
GOING TO BATTLE: Over Miami's last six games, the RedHawks have started to lean more on
Edyn Battle. Battle, who played just one game a year ago before suffering a season-ending injury, has surpassed double-digits four different times in her last six games.
IN THE MAC: With Mid-American Conference play beginning, the RedHawks rank near the top of several categories
• Miami is first in three-point percentage defense (.263).
