Miami Drops Three-Set Decision to Akron

OXFORD, Ohio—The Miami University volleyball team (2-11; 0-3 Mid-American Conference) dropped a three-set decision to the University of Akron (7-8; 1-2 MAC) on Thursday evening in Millett Hall, 15-25, 22-25, 25-27.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The teams went back and forth in the early goings of the first set. After a junior Allyson Severance kill knotted the stanza at 7-7, the Zips pushed ahead to a 15-8 advantage off a 7-1 run and did not look back as they collected a 25-15 win in the opening set.
- Akron opened up an 11-5 lead in the second set. Miami chiseled away and pulled within two off a block by senior Gaby Harper and sophomore Maggie McCrary, 22-20. The RedHawks again closed within two at 24-22, but the Zips took the second set, 25-22.
- A freshman Margo Lawson service ace spurred Miami to an early 6-4 advantage in the third set. The set remained close with neither team leading by more than two until Akron used a 4-0 spurt to take a 20-15 lead. Miami battled back to knot the set at 22-22, and the teams continued to trade punches until Akron used back-to-back kills to clinch the third set, 27-25.
NOTES:
- Harper paced Miami with 10 kills, while Severance led MU with nine digs.
- Senior Jennifer Schulze notched 21 assists.
