Miami Squeaks by App State On Fourth Quarter Goal, 1-0

 Boone, NC. — The Miami University field hockey team defeated Appalachian State 1-0 in a very tightly contested Mid-American Conference contest on Friday afternoon. The RedHawks improve to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in the MAC, while App State falls to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in MAC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Miami is back in action again on Sept 19. at 1 p.m. in Chapel Hill, NC against the University of North Carolina.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In a very back and forth tight first quarter, both teams fired two shots but were unable to hit the back of the net. Leaving the score locked at 0-0 after the first 15 minutes
- Towards the end of the second quarter, Miami worked the ball across the cage on a series of passes but was still unable to break the tie with App State. At the half, the RedHawks led the Mountaineers in shots 5-3 but trailed in penalty corners 2-1 after a scoreless opening 30 minutes.
- The RedHawks came out firing early and often in the third quarter with four shots in the first seven minutes bringing their total to nine shots. Including a shot that was on target but just high by Paula Pena.
- The last part of the third quarter saw Isabelle Perese making two key saves with just under three minutes left in the third quarter to keep the game scoreless at 0-0.
- Morgan Sturm got the scoring started with 11:47 left in the fourth quarter off of a sound penalty corner as the RedHawks took a 1-0 advantage.
- The RedHawks completely controlled the fourth quarter despite only tallying one goal off of nine shots compared to the Mountaineers zero. The final shot count saw Miami lead 18-6 and the RedHawks also led 6-3 in penalty corners.
Miami is back in action again on Sept 19. at 1 p.m. in Chapel Hill, NC against the University of North Carolina.
