EVANSTON, Ill.—In a battle of Top-25 teams, the No. 21 Miami University field hockey team (0-1) was edged 2-1 in its season opener by No. 6 University of Connecticut (1-1) on Saturday afternoon at Lakeside Field in a neutral-site game in Evanston, Illinois.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- UConn took a 2-0 lead into the half, scoring one goal in both the first and second quarters.
- Miami cut into the deficit early in the fourth quarter when Claudia Negrete Garcia scored an unassisted goal at the 47:22 mark. The RedHawks applied pressure late with three shots and three penalty corners in the last five minutes, but were unable even the score.
- The Huskies held a 12-8 advantage in shots and 6-5 edge in penalty corners, while each team recorded three saves apiece.
