ATHENS, Ohio — Despite solid pitching by the Miami University baseball team against the Ohio University Bobcats, the RedHawks dropped both ends of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader in Athens on Friday, falling 3-1 in the opening game and 1-0 in the nightcap. Starting pitchers Grant Hartwig and Jonathan Brand both had very strong outings, throwing complete games while striking out eleven and eight batters, respectively. The RedHawks fall 19-22 (12-15 MAC), while the Bobcats improve to 24-15 (15-11 MAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In game one, redshirt freshman Benji Brokemond led off the game with a solo home run to left field, allowing the RedHawks to take a 1-0 lead. Brokemond's home run, the only scoring play for Miami on the day, was the first of his career. The Bobcats then responded three unanswered to take game one, 3-1.
- In game two, which was a close affair all nine innings, the Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh and held on for the win.
MIAMI GAME NOTES:
- Pitching was a highlight for Miami all day. Brand threw a complete game in a losing effort for game one, striking out eight batters while allowing just four hits throughout six innings of work. In game two, Hartwig also threw a complete game by striking out eleven batters and allowing just five base runners and one run in eight innings.
WHAT'S NEXT:
