LEXINGTON, Ky.—Junior
Allie Cummins belted a solo home run in the first inning and added a double in the fourth inning, but it was not enough as the Miami University softball team dropped a 7-1 decision to Northwestern University (30-16) on Saturday afternoon in its second game in the NCAA Tournament Lexington Regional.
The RedHawks finish the season with a 46-10 mark, setting Miami records for most wins and fewest losses in a season amidst a myriad of other program and Mid-American Conference single-season records.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Miami got on the board in the first inning with Cummins' home run over the right field fence with two outs to give the RedHawks a 1-0 lead. The homer, Cummins' 17th of the season, tied her for the RedHawks' single-season record with teammate Karli Spaid.
- The Wildcats scored three in the top of the second inning to push ahead, 3-1. Northwestern added to its lead with a four-run homer in the top of the fifth inning to take a 7-1 advantage.
- Cummins was 2-for-3 on the day at the plate with a run and RBI. Freshman Karlee Juarez, junior Adriana Barlow and senior Lily Wilmot each recorded hits for Miami.
- Senior Courtney Vierstra pitched 4.2 innings, picking up six strikeouts, while junior Brianna Pratt came in to throw 2.1 innings in relief and collect three strikeouts.
