DeKALB, Ill.—Twelve runs over the first two innings was all the Miami University softball team needed to pick up the series sweep with a 12-0, five-inning win at Northern Illinois on Sunday afternoon in the regular-season finale.
The 2021 Mid-American Conference Champion RedHawks finish league play with an impressive 36-2 mark and own a 46-8 overall record heading into this weekend's NCAA Tournament. The Huskies finished at 19-37 overall and 13-27 in MAC play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The RedHawks erupted for seven runs off eight hits in the opening inning. Miami's scoring included RBI singles from senior Mackenzie Moore, junior Adriana Barlow, senior Morgan Lott and freshman Karlee Juarez and two-run double by freshman Karli Spaid.
- Miami continued to pad its lead in the second inning, rattling off five more runs off four hits. Moore, Lott and Spaid each belted RBI doubles, while Juarez recorded a two-run double.
NOTES:
- Juarez was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and three RBI to lead five RedHawk players who had multi-hit games.
- Senior Courtney Vierstra moved to 26-3 on the season with the win in the circle. Vierstra pitched all five innings, giving up just six hits and one walk while striking out seven.
- Miami hit five doubles in the five-inning win.
- The RedHawks have won 21 run-rule games, while 19 of their 48 wins have been shutouts.
