DeKALB, Ill.—A pair of home runs that comprised the scoring in a five-run third inning propelled the Miami University softball team to a 7-6 win at Northern Illinois University on Friday afternoon. The RedHawks improve to 43-8 overall and 33-2 in Mid-American Conference action, while the Huskies drop to 19-34 overall and 13-24 in MAC play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Junior Riley Coyne hit an RBI double to plate freshman Karli Spaid in the top of the first inning to give Miami a quick 1-0 lead. Junior Allie Cummins then stole home to extend the Miami lead to 2-0. NIU scored in the bottom of the inning to cut the MU lead in half, 2-1.
- Cummins homered to left field to lead off the top of the third inning for the RedHawks. Later in the inning, sophomore Kate Kobayashi drilled a grand slam to right center to extend the Miami lead to 7-1. The Huskies tacked on two runs in the bottom of the third and three in the bottom of the fifth to pull within 7-6, which would be the final margin.
- Senior Mackenzie Moore was the lone RedHawk with a multi-hit game, going 3-for-4 at the plate, including two doubles. She also scored a run.
- With a home run and two runs scored, Cummins moved into sole possession of first in both single-season categories at Miami. Cummins now has 15 home runs on the season and 53 runs scored.
