Miami Comes Up Short in Hard-Fought Five-Set Loss to BGSU

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—In a gritty, hard-fought semifinal battle in the opening match of the Mid-American Conference Tournament, the Miami University volleyball team was edged in a five-set decision by Bowling Green on Friday evening at the Stroh Center. The No. 4 seed RedHawks (13-9) went toe-to-toe with the No. 1 seed Falcons (21-1), 25-15, 21-25, 25-27, 25-22, 12-15.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A senior Sarah Wojick service ace to open the match along with two kills from senior Avarie Powell helped Miami take a fast 4-1 lead in the first set. The RedHawks pushed their lead to seven, 12-5 with help from a sophomore Allyson Severance service ace. A late 4-0 spurt spurred the Red and White to a 21-12 advantage. Another Severance service ace pushed Miami's advantage to double figures, 23-13, and Miami went on to claim the first set 25-15. The RedHawks hit a sizzling .545 for the set with Powell accounting for five kills and junior Sophie Riemersma notching four.
  • A Powell kill followed by back-to-back kills by junior Gaby Harper handed Miami a quick 3-0 edge in the second set. BGSU retaliated with four unanswered points to take their first lead of the match. Neither team led by more than two until the Falcons used a 9-1 run to take a 20-13 advantage. BGSU was at set point, 24-17, but Miami rattled off four straight points, including two kills from Wojick and one from Riemersma, to close within three, 24-21. A BGSU kill ended the RedHawks' run and gave the Falcons the second set, 25-21, to even the match at one set apiece.
  • Two kills from Powell and one from Harper gave Miami an early 4-0 advantage in the third set. The RedHawks pushed their lead to five points three times early on, the last coming at 11-6 off a Harper kill, but BGSU notched four straight points to shrink the gap to 11-10. Bowling Green took its first lead of the set at 17-16, but a kill by Harper and a senior Abigail Huser service ace quickly gave Miami back the lead, 18-17. The teams continued to go back and forth before a kill and service ace by the Falcons edged Miami in the third set, 27-25.
  • Four straight points helped BGSU take an early 9-5 lead in the fourth set. Miami came back to knot the set, 11-11, off a blistering kill by Wojick and a powerful block from Powell and Harper. A kill from freshman Maggie McCrary handed the RedHawks their first lead of the set since the opening point, 19-18. The Falcons came back to post a 22-20 lead, but Miami scored five unanswered points all off kills to close out the fourth set and capture the 25-22 win to force a fifth set.
  • The fifth set was nip and tuck with neither team leading by more than one until the Falcons posted a 9-7 edge. BGSU pushed its advantage to 13-9, but Miami chiseled away and closed within 14-12 off kills by Powell, Severance and Wojick. The Falcons captured the fifth set, 15-12, in a hard-fought battle.
