Miami Falls to Coastal Carolina, 5-3

CONWAY, S.C. — Continuing its stint at the Baseball at the Beach Tournament, the Miami University baseball team (5-5) fell 5-3  to Coastal Carolina University (7-2)  on Saturday. The Miami University RedHawks allowed three home runs, including a three-run home run that gave the Coastal Carolina University Chanticleers the 5-3 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In the bottom of the fourth inning, the RedHawks allowed two solo home runs to let the Chanticleers get out to a 2-0 lead.
  • The RedHawks answered back in the top of the fifth inning when senior shortstop Tyler Wardwell hit a two-run home run to even things up 2-2.
  • In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Chanticleers would jump out to a three-run lead after a three-run home run gave them a 5-2 lead over the RedHawks.
  • It seemed as if the RedHawks were going to mount a comeback; they would score one run in the top of the seventh inning after a leadoff home run by senior catcher Nate Stolze gave the RedHawks some life. The game would ultimately stay 5-3, allowing the Chanticleers to come away with the win.

GAME NOTES:

  • Senior shortstop Tyler Wardwell was 2-for-4 with two hits, including the two-run home run that gave him two RBI on the day.
  • Senior catcher Nate Stolze was 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk.
  • Benji Brokemond was 0-for-1 but reached base in his other three plate appearances by way of two walks and a catcher's interference call.
  • On the mound, senior right-handed pitcher Jacob Webb came in to relieve starter Jonathan Brand, allowing no hits and striking out five opposing hitters over 2.1 innings of work.

WHAT'S NEXT:

The RedHawks continue the weekend in South Carolina with a single game against Davidson College on Sunday. The first pitch is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. in Conway.
