Abigail Huser had a 20-dig effort and recorded her 1,000
th career dig, but it was not enough as the Miami University volleyball team dropped a three-set match at Kent State University on Thursday evening, 19-25, 22-25, 24-26. The RedHawks drop to 5-6 on the season and in Mid-American Conference play, while the Golden Flashes move to 9-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Junior Sophie Riemersma served up an ace to open the scoring in the first set and three kills by senior Avarie Powell helped lift Miami to an early 6-2 lead. The Golden Flashes rattled off four unanswered points to knot the set, 6-6. Kent State used a 7-2 run to push ahead 21-16 and went on to the 25-19 win in the first set.
- In the second set, it was Kent State that took an early 6-2 lead. Miami chiseled away at the KSU lead and knotted the set at 8-8 off a block by freshman Maggie McCrary and sophomore Allyson Severance. The RedHawks took their first lead of the set at 13-12 off a Severance kill. Miami led by as many as 15-13. KSU used a 5-1 spurt to push ahead 23-19 late in the set and went on to the 25-22 win.
- Kent State built an 11-5 lead, but Miami retaliated with an 8-2 run to knot the third set at 13 apiece on a senior Abigail Huser service ace. Back-to-back kills by Powell put the RedHawks in front, 15-14. KSU pushed ahead 24-20, but the RedHawks rattled off four straight points to tie things up, 24-24. A kill and a block by the Golden Flashes handed KSU the 26-24 win in the third set.
COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH CAROLYN CONDIT:
"We couldn't find our stride tonight. Our setters need to consistently produce, and each athlete has to show a more complete game."
NOTES:
- Needing 13 digs entering the match, Huser amassed 20 digs and became the 17th member of Miami's 1,000 Dig Club. Huser has recorded 20 or more digs in four matches this season.
- Powell led Miami with a season-high 15 kills.
- Senior Sarah Wojick was the other RedHawk to record double-digit kills with 10. She has been in double figures for kills in seven of Miami's last eight matches.
