Miami Grabs Dramatic 3-2 Come-From-Behind Win at CMU

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—In a dramatic five-set come-from-behind win, the Miami University volleyball team won the last three sets to claim a 28-30, 22-25, 30-28, 25-22, 15-11 win at Central Michigan University on Friday night. Seniors Sarah Wojick and Avarie Powell amassed career highs in kills, recording 22 and 20, respectively. It was the fourth-straight win for the RedHawks, who move to 12-8 on the season and in Mid-American Conference play. The Chippewas drop to 11-10.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A pair of kills by Powell helped Miami take an 18-13 lead in the opening set. CMU used a 9-2 run to come back and post a 22-20 edge. Consecutive kills from Wojick and a junior Gaby Harper service ace put Miami back on top, 23-22. The teams continued to trade punches in a hard-fought first set before the Chippewas edged the RedHawks, 30-28.
  • Senior Morgan Seaman opened the second set with back-to-back service aces. The RedHawks led by as many as three early on, but the Chippewas came back to knot the set at 12-12. Miami forged a 19-17 lead off with kills from Powell and sophomore Allyson Severance, but a 5-1 spurt by CMU put the Chippewas back on top, 22-20. A kill by Wojick put Miami within one, 23-22, but back-to-back CMU kills handed it the second set, 25-22.
  • CMU pushed ahead to a quick 4-1 lead in the third set, but Miami climbed back to post an 11-10 lead. The RedHawks pushed their lead to 17-14 off a block by junior Sophie Riemersma and Powell. Much like the first set, neither team wanted to relent and they went back and forth until a kill and service ace by Severance put Miami at set point, setting the stage for junior Gaby Harper to clinch the third stanza for the RedHawks with a kill, 30-28.
  • The Chippewas built a 20-14 lead in the fourth set, but seven unanswered points for the RedHawks that included a pair of kills from Harper and two from Wojick handed Miami a 21-20 edge. Two more kills from Wojick and a block by Wojick and freshman Maggie McCrary sent the match to a deciding set as the RedHawks seized the fourth set, 25-22. The RedHawks outscored the Chippewas 11-2 to round out the set.
  • Miami jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the fifth set with kills from Harper and Wojick and two from Severance. The RedHawks held a 7-3 lead, but the Chippewas rattled off three straight to close within one. Miami maintained its lead until the Chippewas knotted the set at 11-11. Two kills from Wojick and a block and kill from McCrary handed Miami the come-from-behind win, 15-11.
COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH CAROLYN CONDIT:
