OXFORD, Ohio—A six-run fourth inning that was punctuated with a grand slam by junior
Adriana Barlow, iced a 10-0 five-inning win for the Miami University softball team over Western Michigan University on Sunday afternoon. The RedHawks, who swept the four-game weekend series against the Broncos, improve to 11-6 on the season and 4-0 in Mid-American Conference play. The Broncos drop to 4-13 overall and 0-4 in MAC action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Miami took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when a junior Allie Cummins double to right center plated sophomore Kate Kobayashi. Cummins advanced to third on the next at-bat and then scored on a senior Jada Dotson single to left field.
- A freshman Karli Spaid triple down the right field line allowed junior Riley Coyne to cross the plate in the bottom of the second inning. Spaid then scored on a wild pitch to put the RedHawks up 4-0.
- Back-to-back RBI doubles by freshman Holly Blaska and Spaid allowed Miami to extend its lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning. With bases loaded and two outs, Barlow stepped to the plate and blasted a grand slam over the centerfield fence to lift Miami to a 10-0 lead, which would be the final margin.
NOTES:
- The Miami pitching staff of junior Brianna Pratt, senior Courtney Vierstra and senior Taylor Rathe gave up just three hits over five innings while striking out 10 Bronco batters.
- Spaid went 2-for-2 on the day with two runs and two RBI, while freshman Karlee Juarez was the other RedHawk with a multi-hit day, going 2-for-3 with a run.
- Three of the RedHawks' four weekend games against the Broncos went five innings.
