Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Toledo

OXFORD, Ohio — In game one, Jacob Webb was electric for the Miami University baseball team, throwing five scoreless innings in a 2-1 comeback win against the University of Toledo on Saturday afternoon at McKie Field at Hayden Park. Miami dropped the nightcap to the Rockets, 4-3. The RedHawks move to 9-8 overall and 2-1 Mid-American Conference play, while Toledo moves to 3-13 on the season and 1-2 in MAC action.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Game One:

  • The Rockets took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. A pitchers duel unfolded over the next five innings, with junior Sam Bachman and senior Jacob Webb combining to shut down the Rockets.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, freshman Dalton Back hit a ground-rule double to left-center field. Following, redshirt freshman Nate Stone walked, giving the RedHawks two runners on base. A wild pitch put the runners on second and third; then, an error allowed both to score.

Game Two:

  • In the bottom of the first inning, junior Nick Neibauer singled to center, scoring senior Michael Morissette from second. Neibauer was able to advance to second on the throw, which allowed him to score on redshirt freshman Benji Brokemond's single, giving the RedHawks a 2-0 lead.
  • In the third, following an Andrews double to the left, junior Tyler Wardwell hit a bloop single between the Rockets' defenders, driving in Andrews to put the RedHawks up 3-1.
  • In the top of the sixth, the Rockets scored twice, taking a 4-3 lead which they did not relinquish.

GAME NOTES:

  • Junior Cole Andrews went 2-for-3 at the plate, with a double in game one.
  • Webb was dominant out of the bullpen, pitching five scoreless innings, which is a career-high. He struck out 10 batters while allowing just one hit and one walk. Webb picked up the win in game one.
  • Brokemond went 3-for-4 in the second game, with an RBI and steal.
  • Neibauer went 2-for-3 in the second game, with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Overall, Wardwell went 2-for-5 with an RBI.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The RedHawks return to the diamond on Sunday, March 21 for the final game of the four-game series. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
