RedHawks Edged in Five Sets by Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—In a hard-fought five-set match, the Miami University volleyball team came up short on Friday evening at the Stroh Center as the Bowling Green Falcons notched an 18-25, 26-28, 25-21, 25-16, 15-13 win to move to 6-0 in Mid-American Conference play. The RedHawks drop to 3-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The RedHawks came out on fire in the first set. After a 6-6 tie, Miami charged ahead to a 14-8 advantage. BGSU got no closer than three as MU extended its lead to as many as seven, taking the first set, 25-18. The RedHawks amassed five blocks in the first set, while senior Abigail Huser tallied six digs.
  • Neither team led by more than two until BGSU took a 17-14 lead and the teams continued to go back and forth. The Falcons held a 23-20 edge, but kills by senior Sarah Wojick and junior Sophie Riemersma along with a Riemersma and senior Avarie Powell block pushed Miami ahead, 24-23. Both teams continued to trade punches until a BGSU attack error and a sophomore Allyson Severance kill clinched the second set for the RedHawks, 28-26.
  • Bowling Green built a seven-point lead in the third set, 18-11. After Miami called timeout to re-group, the RedHawks rattled off four-straight points that included a kill and a service ace by Wojick to pull within three, 18-15. The Falcons pushed ahead by five, but Miami shrunk the gap to two off a Severance kill, 23-21, but the Falcons notched the last two points to take the third set, 25-21.
  • The Falcons took a lead early on in the set and didn't look back, sending the match to a fifth set with a 25-16 win in the fourth stanza.
  • BGSU jumped out to a 5-0 lead and led by as many as six in the fifth set, 12-6. The RedHawks used a 6-1 run to pull within one, 13-12. After the Falcons went up 14-12, a Severance kill again put Miami within one, but Bowling Green took the match with a 15-13 set five win.
