OXFORD, Ohio — After falling to the Broncos on Friday, Miami battled Western Michigan in their regular-season finale. The Broncos scored the two final goals of the game that eventually put them on top, as the Miami University hockey team was defeated by the Broncos, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon at Steve "Coach" Cady Arena.
The Broncos opened up the scoring with the first two of the game, but the RedHawks responded quickly with two second-period goals from Robby Drazner and Rourke Russell to tie it at two. Still, Western Michigan's offensive performance in the third was the difference-maker, with an empty-net goal to finish it off. With the win, the Broncos improve to 10-11-3 on the season, while the RedHawks fall to 5-17-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 1:03 2nd (WMU 1-0) | After a scoreless first period, Ethen Frank put Western Michigan on the board first. Ronnie Attard passed the puck over to Frank, and Frank skated up the middle of the ice, weaving his way through the neutral zone for a breakaway. He put the puck up over the left shoulder of Ludvig Persson to make it a 1-0 game.
- 5:11 2nd (WMU 2-0) | Luke Grainger put the Broncos up by another goal after receiving the puck in the slot from a 3-on-1 play. Michael Joyaux, who got the primary assist, brought the puck up initially before it was poked away to Grainger for the goal. The goal was scored at even strength.
- 8:54 2nd (Miami 2-1) | Shortly after the Broncos scored, Miami responded. Matthew Barbolini passed the puck from the right point to an open Drazner. Drazner got the puck with speed at the right circle and scored from a high-wrister in the top corner on a four-on-four. Casey Gilling was credited with an assist on the play.
- 10:58 2nd (Miami 2-2) | Miami later tied the game with a goal from Russell. Russell took a hard slap from the point that hit the boards and slid behind the Western Michigan goaltender who knocked the puck in. Drazner and Monte Graham received the assists for the game-tying goal to close out the second frame.
- 6:23 3rd (WMU 3-2) | Attard scored for the Broncos giving them the lead early in the final period. Attard received a cross-crease pass from Jason Polin and buried from the left side, just barely beating Persson to the post.
- 19:40 3rd (WMU 4-2) | Paul Washe received a flip pass from Attard, who was deep in their zone and put the puck in the empty net to close this one out in favor of the Broncos.
