Scott’s Buzzer-Beater Secures 61-58 RedHawk Victory

OXFORD, Ohio – Sophomore Peyton Scott's three-pointer at the buzzer gave the Miami University women's basketball team a 61-58 victory on Saturday afternoon over the Kent State Golden Flashes. Scott finished the game with 25 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists, while Kelly McLaughlin had 21 points.

Miami also celebrated senior day on Saturday, honoring Abbey Hoff, McLaughlin and Kenzie Schmitz prior to the contest. The win moves the RedHawks to 4-18 overall and 3-16 in Mid-American Conference play. Kent State falls to 10-7, 9-5 MAC.

 
How it Happened:
  • Kent State raced out to a 15-6 advantage with 1:53 to play in the first quarter until Hoff and McLaughlin hit back-to-back triples to close the gap to 15-12. The Golden Flashes led 18-12 after 10 minutes of action.
  • The KSU lead was as much as 32-21 with 3:40 left in the half before the RedHawks closed the quarter on a 10-1 spurt. Highlights of the run included back-to-back threes from Schmitz and Katie Davidson just 28 seconds apart late in the second quarter. The Golden Flashes led 33-31 at the half.
  • A pair of free throws late in the third by Scott gave Miami a 51-44 advantage, its largest lead of the contest. Miami would lead 51-46 heading to the fourth.
  • Kent State held a 58-55 advantage with 1:06 to play. On the ensuing possession, Scott converted an old-fashioned three-point play to knot the score at 58-58. After a stop on the other end of the floor, Miami called timeout with 10 seconds to play. Scott lost control of the inbounds play and Miami was forced to call timeout with 3.2 seconds to play. Scott then pulled up from behind the arc as time expired for the game winner.
 
Game Notes:
  • Peyton Scott nearly became just the second member of the women's basketball program to record a triple-double, finishing with 25 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists. Only Linda Mallender accomplished the feat (12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists) in 1984.
  • Scott's 12 rebounds was also a career-best, surpassing the 11 she had versus Ohio and Western Michigan earlier this season.
