MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.— Sarah Bruns grabbed the first individual MAC indoor championship for Miami, and Katie Vitou finished as runner-up in the 5000-meters as the Miami women's track and field team competed on the first day of the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships on Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In a day filled mostly with track prelims, Bruns was Miami's biggest point-getter as she took the title in the pentathlon. After taking 10th in the first two events, Bruns turned it on for the final three, taking first in the long jump with a leap of 5.48m. She also took the top score in the shot put, with a throw of 11.02m. She closed out the event with a 2:24.81 in the 800m, good for third in that event and first overall.
- Vitou ran a 17:16.76 in the 5000 to take second in the final, just two seconds behind the top finisher. In the 60m hurdles, Kayla Walters grabbed seventh-place with a run of 8.89 and will race in Saturday's prelims in the event. Likewise, Faith Baxter (400-meters) and Lotti Roemer (800-meters) advanced to the finals in their respective events after great prelim performances.
- On the field, Sydney Jefferson competed in the weight throw, finishing in ninth with a throw clearing 17.80m. Katie Folta was the only RedHawk in the long jump, clearing a distance of 4.48m to finish in 19th.
- The day's final event was a four-pointer for the 'Hawks as the distance medley relay team took fifth. McKenna Fry, Mallory Harr, Roemer, and Emily Akin combined to run an 11:45.11 time.
