Baseball Begins 2021 with Two Wins Over Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Miami University baseball team started the 2021 season earning two wins against Jacksonville University in a doubleheader in Florida on Saturday afternoon. The RedHawks started the day with a 4-1 win over the Dolphins before finishing off the day with a come-from-behind 8-4 victory in game two. Miami starts the season with a 2-0 record, and Jacksonville moves to 0-2.

How it Happened:

GAME ONE

  • Sam Bachman was the pitcher to start the season off for Miami, throwing five innings in the first game of 2021. Bachman recorded six strikeouts with just one earned run against, while Jacob Webb only gave up one hit in his two innings pitched to replace Bachman on the mound.
  • Stephen Krause was the first run of the game in the second inning, as he was able to score after Cristian Tejada reached first base on a fielder's choice.
  • The second inning was a fierce one for the 'Hawks, as Michael Morissette scored Miami's second run of the inning after Tejada advanced to second base from a wild pitch.
  • Krause got to first base due to an error by the shortstop in the third inning, which allowed Brian Zapp to score and make it a 3-1 game early.
  • To finish game one, Zapp hit a triple, and Benji Brokemond was able to seal the win for Miami by making it 4-1.

GAME TWO:

  • Jonathan Brand was called to the mound to start game two for Miami, and he threw three innings against the Dolphins. Grant Hartwig saw action in the game's final four innings and allowed no runs with four strikeouts.
  • The RedHawks were the first ones to score in game two, with Zapp continuing his stellar day. Will Vogelgesang flew out to the center field, and Zapp was able to score to make it a 1-0 game in Miami's favor early in the third.
  • After the Dolphins scored the next three, Miami found themselves behind going into the sixth. Nate Stone was able to score in the sixth to make it a 4-2 game.
  • The eighth inning was critical for Miami. With the bases loaded, Zapp walked, which gave Parker Massman the chance to score. Following Zapp's walk, Vogelgesang was hit by a pitch and walked, which allowed Mac Hippenhammer to score.
  • Cole Andrews grounded the ball out to second base, and Tejada scored Miami's third run of the eighth to move the score in Miami's favor. Zapp finished the inning by scoring a run on a wild pitch and ended the inning with the score at 6-4.
  • The RedHawks' comeback was complete when the ninth came around, and the RedHawks scored two more times to seal the doubleheader sweep. Massman scored his second run on the game after Zapp was hit by a pitch from the Dolphins' pitcher, and Hippenhammer got his first run as a RedHawk.
