OXFORD, Ohio — The Miami University hockey team emerged victorious over the #6/7 St. Cloud State Huskies in game one of a two-game series at Steve "Coach" Cady Arena. Miami defeated St. Cloud State, 3-2, after a flurry of third-period action helped the ice tilt in favor of the RedHawks.
Freshman goaltender Ludvig Persson recorded 36 saves in net for Miami, standing tall for the RedHawks to keep the score in the host's favor in the last few minutes of the game. Matthew Barbolini also had a great night offensively, collecting two assists to get Miami on the board. With the win, the RedHawks continue the season with a 5-14-2 record, while the Huskies of Saint Cloud move to 12-8-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 5:00 1st (St. Cloud 1-0) | Just five minutes in, the Huskies were the ones to strike first in Oxford. St. Cloud made it 1-0 after Spencer Meier found the back of the net. Will Hammer found Meier as he was entering the zone, and Meier was able to walk the puck in and fire a shot from just inside the top of the circle.
- 9:55 3rd (Miami 1-1) | Just past the halfway point in the third, Alec Capstick was able to tie things up after finding the back of the net. Capstick carried the puck into the zone before dishing it to forward Matthew Barbolini, who sent it back over for Capstick to fire home.
- 10:08 3rd (Miami 2-1) | Soon after the RedHawks' first goal, Miami took the lead from nationally-ranked SCSU after John Sladic found a rebound that he sent home for the second goal to give Miami the advantage. Scott Corbett fired a puck on net that got redirected from Phil Knies to Sladic, who buried the goal.
- 10:18 3rd (St. Cloud 2-2) | Ten seconds later, St. Cloud tied things up, 2-2, after Meier found Jami Krannila, who was able to score for the Huskies. A long pass from the defensive zone found Krannila, who slipped into the zone and around the defenders to score on Persson to tie it up.
- 12:50 3rd (Miami 3-2) | Miami went back on top as Casey Gilling scored the eventual game-winning goal. Derek Daschke swatted a puck to Matthew Barbolini, who sent a pass over to Gilling. Gilling got a wrist shot in the back of the net to give the RedHawks the 3-2 lead and the victory.
