ON TAP: Miami plays its second home game of the week, hosting Ball State on Saturday, Feb. 13. Opening tip is slated for 1 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: Sophomore
Peyton Scott had 31 points and senior
Kelly McLaughlin added 20 points but it wasn't enough as the RedHawks dropped a 81-78 decision to the Central Michigan Chippewas on Wednesday evening. Miami led 60-47 after three quarters of play, but were outscored 34-18 in the final 10 minutes of play.
ABOUT BALL STATE: The Cardinals are 9-8 overall and 7-6 in conference play, while averaging 71.0 points per contest. Ball State has dropped three straight, including an 88-66 loss versus Ohio on Wednesday. Oshlynn Brown leads the way with 18.2 points and 12.0 rebounds. Earlier this year Brown had 33 points and 15 boards in the Cardinals 85-82 win versus Miami back on Jan. 27.
SERIES WITH THE CARDINALS: This is the 69th meeting between the two schools with Miami holding a 40-28 advantage. Ball State has won nine of the last 10 contests.
DON'T LET THE RECORD FOOL YOU: While the season has not gone as planned for the RedHawks, they are playing their best basketball of the season currently. In its last 20 quarters, Miami has outscored/tied its opponent in 12 of those quarters. In three of its last four losses, the contests have been decided by a single possession.
NO RESERVES: Miami has played much of the season with an extremely thin roster, competing much of the year with a max of 10 players due to, opt outs and injuries. In 18 games this season Miami has used eight different starting lineups and just
Peyton Scott and
Katie Davidson have started every contest.
100-POINT CLUB: Peyton Scott was named MAC Player of the Week on Feb. 9 and she might very well be on track for another this week. The sophomore is coming off a 31-point effort versus Central Michigan, giving her 102 points in the past three games. Scott is the first RedHawk to score 30-plus in three consecutive contests in school history. Over the past three games Scott has averaged 34.0 points, 7.3 rebounds and 4.0 steals per game.
WELCOME BACK: In the loss to CMU,
Kelly McLaughlin had 20 points and nine rebounds in 33 minutes of action. In her previous three contests, McLaughlin combined for 16 points and 11 rebounds.
GREAT SCOTT: Peyton Scott had a banner year for the RedHawks in 2019-20, averaging 12.5 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, earning All-MAC Freshman honors, but that is nothing compared to what she is doing in 2020-21. The sophomore is averaging 21.2 points and 6.7 rebounds this season. Playing much of this season as the team's point guard, Scott is also averaging 5.1 assists per game after averaging just 2.2 a year ago. She ranks fourth in the MAC in scoring (21.2), 11th in rebounding (6.7), second in assists (5.1), third in steals (2.7), 13th in field goal percentage (42.2%) and eighth in free throw percentage (83.7%).
LEAVING IT ALL ON THE FLOOR: Peyton Scott also ranks first in the MAC in minutes played (37.9), but even that doesn't tell the entire story. Over her last 11 games, the sophomore has played 435 of 440 available minutes. In all, she has played all 40 minutes in nine of 18 games this year.
REWRITING HISTORY: Peyton Scott's attack on the record has kept Miami's SID busy in 2020-21.
* She now owns three top-10 scoring performances all-time at Miami, with 34 points versus NIU and Kent State and 37 points against Western Michigan.
* Three different times this season she has made 14 field goals in a game, tops in school history.Â
* She became the first RedHawk in school history to score at least 30 points in three straight games and last week scored 71 points (in two games), tied for most in a two-game stretch in Miami history. Courtney Osborn scored 71 points on Jan. 4 & 7, 2012. Even the great Wally Szczerbiak only scored 67 points in back-to-back games during his incredible NCAA Tournament run in 1998-99.
* Earlier this year she had 13 assists at Ball State, which is tops in school history.
* Her season average of 21.2 points would rank second all-time at Miami, behind just Amanda Jackson's 21.6 average during the 2007-08 campaign.
* Scott is on pace to finish her first two seasons at Miami with a combined 884 points. Only
Lauren Dickerson (1,146) and Courtney Osborn (1,033) have scored more points in their first two years at Miami.
SAVING THE BEST FOR LAST: Kelly McLaughlin scored 188 points and had 125 rebounds in her first three years with the RedHawks, averaging 4.1 points and 2.7 rebounds. This year, the senior has already scored 181 points and recorded 108 rebounds in 16 games.
