RedHawks' Late Goal Over Ohio Punches MAC Title Game Ticket

Oxford, Ohio — On Friday afternoon, the Miami University field hockey team defeated Ohio University 1-0, in the Mid-American Conference Semifinals in a down to the wire game. A late fourth-quarter goal by Paula Pena was enough to give the RedHawks their second victory over Ohio on the season and earn a spot in the MAC Tournament Championship Game. Miami improves to 10-10 on the season, while Ohio finishes the year 7-12.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The first 15 minutes were back and forth as both Miami and Ohio were trying to settle in. The RedHawks put up four shots and had one penalty corner, while Ohio didn't record either in the first quarter. On the only penalty corner of the first quarter, Morgan Sturm sent a shot off of the post for the RedHawks.
  • With 9:02 left in the second quarter, Claudia Negrete Garcia sent in a shot off of a penalty corner that was saved, and then Lexie Nugent fired a rebound shot that was also saved by Ohio.  Leaving the score deadlocked at 0-0.
  • The RedHawks defense stood tall in the final seconds of the first half, shutting down two consecutive corners. At the half the score remained 0-0, Miami led in shots 11-3 and penalty corners were even at two each.
  • Ohio was able to attack more in the third quarter, as they had three corners that were all stopped and well defended by Miami. The RedHawks also had a penalty corner of their own where Negrete Garcia had a shot saved. Ohio also led the third quarter in shots 5-2, as the score remained knotted up at 0-0 after 45 minutes played.
  • Paula Pena broke the tie on a goal put into the top left on the cage, assisted by Lexie Nugent with just under two minutes played in the fourth quarter, resulting in a 1-0 lead for Miami. The goal was Pena's fifth of the year, while Nugent picks up her second assist of the season.
  • In an effort to get the equalizer, Ohio pulled their goalie with three minutes remaining in the game, but Miami was able to control possession and prevent Ohio from getting any good looks.
  • Miami ended the game leading in shots 19-12, while Ohio led in penalty corners 8-4.
